The Cyber Security Issue – COSBOA Council Meeting: 24 May 2017, Hotel Kurrajong, Canberra

Cyber Security hit the headlines over the weekend – how BIG is the problem and how do we PROTECT ourselves?

The COSBOA Council Meeting on 24 May 2017 at Hotel Kurrajong, Canberra will address this issue:

THE CONTEMPORARY WORK OF BUSINESS

MANAGING BUSINESS INTERRUPTION AND THE CYBER SECURITY CRISIS

Businesses now have to deal with new short term or long term disruptions that never before existed as well being confronted with power blackouts experienced for the first time in most people’s living memory.

We have a threat of cyber security that can only be called a crisis, no one can guarantee an attack will not happen to their business.

We also have a profound reliance on telecommunications and all its facets so when we have a Telstra outage or a related problem with EFTPOS, phones, satellites and the like we can have a disaster for a business. The worst-case scenario is closure of the business and the best case is extremely high levels of stress. It can and will result in job losses or unpaid downtime so the impact is felt not just on businesses but on the community.

The impact of disruption on a large company will have corresponding impacts on suppliers or on customers. This will also have potential damaging impacts on businesses in other markets including overseas, or from overseas suppliers dealing with Australian businesses.

There is the ever present threat from natural disasters such as floods and bushfires as well as new threats from terrorism and endemics.

These issues need to be considered as business outages and business management problems. To view them as stand-alone problems such as ‘electricity’ or ‘security’ issues is to silo each problem when the reality is there will be a solution or a better management process that will be of common use to managing some if not all of the new disruptions.

Business people, small business people in particular, need to be aware of each potential problem but they need to see these as business issues not as a policy need.

As always when dealing with small businesses 80% of any solution will be found through process management and communications.
